To the youth of Adams and Jefferson counties, it is time for our fifth annual outdoor youth day. Mark your calendars for Saturday, Oct. 1. Plans are being put into place for activities to be on the Historic Jefferson College grounds. The grounds will be open at 9 a.m. and will close at 5 p.m. Included in the day’s events will be a free cookout, a bounce house, inspirational speakers, hiking, games and a visit from local dignitaries. Sunday school groups, scout troops and youth groups are welcome.

On behalf of the Northern Adams County Outdoor Recreation Group, we invite you to come and spend the day with us. We believe by enhancing the lives of our youth through the principles of education, environmental protection and social participation, they can become the future leaders of this state and nation.

This is the beginning of a new school year and we want to encourage you to be the best students that have passed through these systems. We ask that you take a walk outdoors, find out what you can do as an individual to enhance and preserve the environment that we all depend on. Learn how to enjoy it and protect it.

A book store is located on site where you can purchase valuable resources that tell the history of Southwest Mississippi and beyond. Books on native plants and animals can also be purchased. Also on site is a beautiful hiking trail. Bring your hiking boots and hit the trail. Your camera should be a part of your trip. Your favorite pet is welcome, but also must be on a leash at all times.

A survey will be taken for the possibility of a hunters’ education courses and boat safety course. Parents and guardians can take these courses to become certified for licensing to fish and hunt. Even if you don’t plan to hunt or fish, the chance is there to learn about our great outdoors and about the efforts to protect it. If the interest is high enough for these course, further assistance will be sought through the Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and Parks.

Come join us for an eventful day. Bring your lawn chair and relax under the big oaks.
