Thank you for helping us feed hungry

“Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, ‘Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor in your land.’” — Deuteronomy 15:11

On Christmas day in 1984, 25 people received the first Natchez Community Stewpot meal at the original location, 207 State Street. Following is a quote from The Natchez Democrat on Feb. 14, 1987:

“… in the last two years, [the Stewpot] has expanded from serving 25 meals each day to nearly 100, from five days a week to six, and in the fall of 1986, from our original location at 207 State Street to the larger quarters at 69 East Franklin Street.”

Today, the Stewpot prepares approximately 300 meals each day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, with two-thirds of the meals going to the elderly, handicapped and shut-ins. This is accomplished by two paid employees and an army of individual volunteers, civic groups, and churches.

The Stewpot has remained at the East Franklin Street location for 30 years. But upkeep of the building has been sporadic, as funds have not always been available.

Last month, the Mississippi State Health inspector visited the Stewpot, and we did not pass the inspection due to a roach infestation, a problem we’ve had for years. We consulted pest control professionals who provided a list of changes to be made including, but not limited to: better sanitation, removal of wooden shelving, caulking holes in the walls, and treating or plugging floor drains.

We immediately began sanitizing, cleaning out and replacing old wooden shelving. We also thought now was a good time to add a much-needed fresh coat of paint, fix roof leaks and repair ceilings. A restaurant closing in town allowed us to purchase stainless steel shelving, tables and a large cooler at a discounted price. We are pleased with the outcome: the inspection was passed on August 8.

We could not make these improvements without the continued support of the Natchez community. Your contribution toward these unexpected repairs would be greatly appreciated. If your church or civic group is planning now for a 2017 budget, please consider adding a monthly contribution to the Stewpot. No amount is too small!

A big thank you to all the Stewpot benefactors and volunteers for doing your part in helping us fulfill our mission, to feed the hungry and provide an interfaith volunteer program.
