A 24-0 spurt bridged between the second and third quarters sparked Madison-Ridgeland Academy to a 24-6 win over Adams County Christian Academy Friday night in MAIS action.
“It was kind of like how I figured it was going to happen, we kind of wore down,” ACCS coach David King said. “We hadn’t had a game under our belt, and they’re an outstanding ball club.”
Charged by offensive lineman and LSU commit Saahdiq Charles, the Patriots (2-0) racked up 174 rushing yards compared to ACCS’ 133 total yards.
MRA tallied 318 yards for the game.
“We had a play or two that we didn’t make, but we didn’t quit,” King said.
ACCS (0-1) opened the scoring after Cade Wells raced into the end zone late in the first quarter from 1 yard out.
The scoring plunge capped off a strong 9-play drive that was highlighted by a 20-yard end-around run by wide receiver and Louisiana Tech commit George Scott.
Including Wells and Scott, four separate Rebels took snaps at quarterback. Davis Sharp stood out among the quartet as the junior completed 3-of-5 passes for 67 yards.
“We don’t have a philosophy yet on how to work these skill players that we have,” King said. “Overall, I thought the makings of an outstanding team are there.”
Action was halted in the first quarter for approximately 20 minutes after MRA’s Breckon Young had to be taken off the field by an ambulance.
Following Wells’ scoring run, the Patriots rallied to score the final 10 points of the half.
MRA marched 51 yards capitalized on 12 plays to take a 7-6 lead with approximately four minutes remaining in the half.
A botched snap on fourth down then set the Patriots up deep inside ACCS territory, leading to a field goal just before the halftime whistle.
“They’re the better ball club,” King said. “We have to learn from this.
In the second half, MRA capitalized on its second and third possessions to push its advantage to 24-6.
ACCS will attempt to reverse its fortune next week when it travels to Jackson Academy.
“It’s all a matter of working out the kinks and getting better,” King said. “We have to figure out how to get them in the right spots.
We made some mistakes that I don’t think we’ll make in week 2. The most improvement is made from week 1 to week 2.”
Scott and Chris Smotherman each had 10 tackles. Scott had a forced fumble, while DyKevis Ford had a fumble recovery for ACCS.
ACCS had two turnovers to MRA’s one.
