NATCHEZ— The exhibition between a first-year head coach and a veteran coach’s former team never happened.
In the wake of the cancelation of Adams County Christian School’s and Trintiy Episcopal’s exhibition game, ACCS head coach David King said the field conditions would make the exhibition game unnecessarily hazardous.
“There is no just no way we can could play,” King said. “It’s just not worth it.”
Trinity head coach Graham Roberts was unable to be reached for comment.
King said the Rebels are in need of a tune up. With the first week of the regular season approaching, King said the exhibition would have gone a long way to help the team prepare for Madison-Ridgeland Academy on Aug. 19.
“It affects us big-time, because we have the No. 2 private-league team in the state coming in next week,” King said.
King said the forecast of consistent rain for the next week won’t halt ACCS’ preparation for the season opener.
“I think we’re going to have to step it up a notch this week in practice,” King said. “I hear it’s going to be raining all week, but this is high-school football, and we’re going to practice all week. I’m not a big gym guy, so we’re going to be out there all week sloshing it around.”
ACCS senior Chris Smotherman isn’t afraid to get wet. He said the team is looking on the bright side of what is likely a wet week of practice.
“We’re still training to get better every day,” Smotherman said. “The rain is what makes it fun, you can’t control it so you have to put fourth 100 percent, no matter what the weather is.”
When ACCS will kick off its regular season against MRA, Trinity will travel to Zachary, La., to open its season against Silliman Institute.
