ACCS, Trinity to kick seasons off with jamboree matchup

The camps are closed, the rosters are set, and the wait is over.

Football will kick off in the Miss-Lou with a jamboree exhibition game between Trinity Episcopal and host Adams County Christian School at 7 p.m. today.

“I get more excited as the years get older, for some reason,” ACCS head coach David King said. “Every time I think I’m going to get tired, I get more excited about it. It’s all about the kids. It’s a new group I get to re-introduce myself to and build those relationships, and that’s why it’s been fun for me.”

While both coaches agreed the exhibition between the cross-town rivals serves to amplify excitement for the upcoming season, the jamboree strikes a balance between a competitive but injury-free pace.

“I haven’t thought of it (like an exhibition),” Roberts said. “This is a way for us to get some work in before a regular-season game … This is the first time we’ll put on our game jerseys, and it starts to get a little more real.”

Trinity scrimmaged Silliman Institute last week. Otherwise, this is the first full contact game either team will have played since their respective spring games, approximately four months ago.

King emphasized keeping players on both sides healthy was a priority, but he also said he recognizes the intensity of a game between two neighboring schools.

“It’s always good to play in town, so you can get to bed early at night,” King said. “I think it will be a good crowd. Most of these boys know each other, so it will be a good, spirited match.”

Roberts said his team had a subdued week of practice leading up to today’s tilt in hopes his players will be fresh and ready to play at close to full speed.

“I’ll be looking for execution,” Roberts said. “We’ve tried not to do just a whole lot because I want execution with great effort. With the athletes we have, it will put us in a good position to win.”

Trinity and ACCS coaching staffs are perhaps foils of each other. King and his coaching staff boast experience. He is in his fifth season at ACCS and previously coached at Trinity.

For Roberts, it will be a taste of his first game on the sideline as a head football coach.

“I’m excited just ready to get started,” Roberts said. “All of this is about the kids, and I hope we’re heading in a direction to prepare the kids.”

As far as the Xs and Os, Roberts said his offense will have its work cut out against a sturdy ACCS front seven.

“Not only are they good, they have a talented defense,” Roberts said. “They can swarm the football. They’re big up front, and it will take some great execution and effort from us.”

For King, his focus remains on working out the kinks before the regular season gears up next week.

“(Trinity is) outstanding,” King said. “I’ve seen them during 7-on-7. I don’t know if we can stop them or not. Hopefully, we can improve on the little things — the mistakes, the holdings, the turnovers. That’s why you play the jamborees, to sharpen up those little things that kill you.
