Texas West capitalized with runners on base against Vidalia in an 8-2 win in the Senior Softball Little League Southwest Regional tournament Monday night.

The loss was Vidalia’s first of the tournament and grants the host team a No. 2 seed as the tournament shifts from pool play to bracket play.

“(Texas West) was a great-hitting team,” coach Wesley McCarver said. “They did well early and got runs. We loaded the bases a couple of times but couldn’t get them in when we wanted to.”

Texas West posted a three-run, two-out rally in the top of the first inning. Vidalia pitcher Haley Sharp earned a strikeout for the second out of the inning, but Texas roped a two-out triple, and RBI single and a two-RBI double.

Vidalia put runners on base in the bottom of the first and second innings, but couldn’t cash in. Vidalia left two runners on in the each of the firs two innings.

McCarver said he admired his team’s plate approaches, but the girls needed to string together more hits in succession.

“We only had four strikeouts but the main thing is getting our hits together,” McCarver said.

Sharp and the Vidalia defense held Texas scoreless in the second and third innings. Vidalia sprang for two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Katlyn McCarver and Shauneisha Crumpton scored on a pair of wild pitches. Lexie Emanuel tried to tie the game on a ground ball back to the pitcher, but was thrown out at the plate.

Texas scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to open up a 6-2 lead.

All of Vidalia’s hits Monday night were singles. McCarver said the visiting team did an effective job of cashing in on opportunities at the plate and hitting for extra bases.

“The other team had some really good hitters,” McCarver said. “They kept us off balance at the plate.”

Sharp pitched all seven innings for Vidalia and had two singles. Emanuel and Shelbie Vinet also hit two singles in the game.

McCarver said he some positive signs out of his defense.

“All three (outfielders) made some good running catches,” McCarver said. “We almost played error-free ball … We just had some big nerves going to the plate.”

Vidalia faces Texas East at 6 p.m. today in the semifinal round of the tournament.
