VIDALIA — The Vidalia Senior Little League All-Stars capitalized at the plate and on the basepaths to earn a 24-2 win against Colorado in the opening game of the Southwestern Regional tournament Saturday night in Vidalia.

Vidalia racked up 24 runs on 18 hits through five innings.

“Overall it was a great effort,” coach Wesley McCarver said. “I’m very proud of my girls. They played with heart and sportsmanship.”

The game, scheduled for an 8 p.m. start, was delayed until shortly after 9:30 p.m. when lightning delays backed up games earlier in the day.

Vidalia’s Shelbie Vinet reached base on a one-out double in the first inning and scored on a wild pitch to give the host team a 1-0 lead after one inning.

Vidalia posted a 12 spot in the top of the second inning to take a commanding lead.

Lexie Emanuel manufactured a run after reaching base on a leadoff double. Colorado walked four consecutive batters before Vinet roped a two-RBI single.

“We just overmatched them,” McCarver said. “They’re a young team.”

Vidalia pitcher Haley Sharp was acute on the rubber in the tournament opener. She struck out five of the first six batters in the game to finished the game with six strikeouts through a perfect three innings.

“(Sharp) was really good and hit her spots really well,” McCarver said.

Sharp also had three singles. Sydney Watts was 3-for-3 with two doubles. Shauneisha Crumpton roped three doubles.

Vidalia will play its next game at 8 p.m. Monday against Texas West.
