NATCHEZ — Investigators say they have not established a motive for why an Adams County man opened fire on four people in the Cranfield community earlier this week, but the victims have said he was acting oddly before the shooting.
Toby Surrena, 31, was arrested Wednesday evening after he allegedly shot at a vehicle at 41 Fieldview Drive, injuring four people. Two of the victims — both women — were treated locally, while two others — both men — had to be transported to Jackson-area hospitals.
All but one of the victims have been released from the hospital, Adams County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Jerry Brown said.
Surrena reportedly knew the victims and had been with them earlier in the day. They had not had any kind of altercation, Brown said.
“We have talked to some of the victims, and they couldn’t tell us what made him do what he did,” he said.
“(The victims) said he left the house earlier that day, and he came back some time in the afternoon, and they said he was acting kind of deranged when he got there.
“He left the house walking, and somehow came back to the house, went inside, got that rifle and started shooting at them.”
Surrena is being detained without bond at the Adams County Jail on charges of two counts aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon and two counts attempted murder.
