NATCHEZ — A little more than two years ago, New Direction Outreach Ministries began holding services in the back of an old daycare building on Old Washington Road. Today, they are getting ready to host several events in their new home on Oak Street.
The new building has been a church before, and the Rev. Kevin Deason could not be happier about the new location.
“When people see a church building, they know something is there,” Deason said. “Where we were, we only had a sign to say we were a church. It feels different to everyone, and they love it.”
Last weekend, members of the church walked the neighborhood to introduce themselves to the community around the church. The goal is to let the community know that the church is there for them.
The ministry recently became a 501(c)3 organization which will allow for different programs Deason wants to host.
“We now have the room, and with this status, we will be able to do more with the job readiness programs, tutoring and after school activities,” Deason said. “We know there is not much available in our community for kids, and we hope to provide them with something to do every day after school, once school starts.”
The new building has room for growth and the ability to host events.
From July 16-17, the church will host its first women’s conference. THe Guest speaker will be Rhonda Sneed from Houston, Texas. Sneed runs the Restoring Souls Outreach in Texas and deals with issues of the heart. There is no fee for the conference.
“There are people who are out there hurting,” Deason said. “I believe the church is like a hospital where people can come to get some help, counseling and restrengthening to help make their lives better. It doesn’t matter who they are. We are welcoming anyone who is going through hurt.”
Deason said that the church hopes to offer a conference or event every month.
Zackery Berry has joined New Direction to serve as youth minister. He wants to show children that being a Christian can be fun and enjoyable. Children Church services will be in the fellowship hall area from 10:30 to 11:30 am.
The church will also host a community meet-and-greet on from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, July 23. Vendors are welcome to come out and set up booths for a $50 fee to help the raise funds for the church. Activities will also be set up for the children and adults and may include music.
The church will also have a blessing of children before school starts. The date has not been officially set, but it will tentatively be at Aug. 6 at the church. More information may be found on Facebook or www.newdirectionoutreachministries.info.
Deason wants the community to know New Direction is more than just a church. The church is a Christ-centered faith community of love for families and all are welcome.
“Our main focus is the individual and their family,” Deason said. “How can we make them better and be a catalyst for their life getting better.”
