FERRIDAY — Roadwork will begin on Serio Boulevard in Ferriday in the first full week of July.

The roadwork project begins approximately $1 million in street repairs that will be conducted in Ferriday this summer. The contract was awarded to low bidder W.E. Blain & Sons Inc. of Natchez.

“The businesses of Serio Boulevard will have better access after the work is complete,” Mayor Gene Allen said. “The road has just been badly damaged for so long that it’s really starting to impact the businesses there.”

Back in February, the board of aldermen voted to approve $1.28 million in general obligation bonds for street repairs focusing on improving as many area roads as possible. Allen said the city renewed a tax in January to fund the work.

Following Serio Boulevard, Allen said the work would continue on Alabama Avenue between Eighth and Tenth streets. North Tenth Street, Woodland Avenue, Lynnwood Avenue around Shady Lane, Tennessee Avenue and Virginia Avenue will also receive work.

“That area around Tenth Street has really become a liability for the City of Ferriday,” Allen said. “We’ve had to buy a few sets of tires for people who damaged them on that road.”

Bryant Hammett & Associates project engineer Keith Capdepon Jr. said crews should get started the week of July 4. He estimates, weather depending, the project will take approximately one month.
