Cathedral ready to try new triple option offense

NATCHEZ — While other schools in the Miss-Lou have been strapping on the helmet and pads and playing games for the past three Friday nights, Cathedral’s players have spent two of their last three Friday nights sitting on their couches watching TV.

And that is just the way Green Wave coach Craig Beesley likes it.

Since Cathedral couldn’t find an opponent for the opening week of the season on Aug. 21, the Green Wave had two open dates in the first three weeks of the season.

But Beesley doesn’t mind a bit. He is using the time off as an opportunity to fine-tune Cathedral’s new triple option offensive attack as the Green Wave hit the road to take on Enterprise-Lincoln this week.

“It allows us to put in some new stuff and work the kinks out,” Beesley said. “We’re working to get the whole playbook in, and hopefully by Friday night, we’ll be ready to go.”

Cathedral’s only game this year was a 27-0 loss to Loyd Star, but Beesley said not to read too much into that game.

“Watching film of that game, we saw some things we need to work on,” Beesley said. “Loyd Star has shut out its first three opponents of the year and not given up 100 yards in a game yet. We saw some things to get corrected and by Friday, we should be OK.”

Enterprise brings a 1-1 record into the game. The Yellowjackets lost their opener to Bogue Chitto 9-8 before whipping West Lincoln last week 49-18.

Beesley said the Yellowjackets rely on a powerful running game that the Green Wave will need to stop if they want to win.

“They like to run the ball a lot,” Beesley said. “They’ve got a good running back. They’re about the same size as us, so we should match up well with them and be able to contain them.”

Friday’s game is a non-region contest, which wasn’t possible last season when Cathedral was in a region with 10 other teams. Every game last season was a region game.

Cathedral will play three non-region games before opening up Region 4-1A play on Sept. 25 against Sebastopol.

“It’s good to be able to play games before you hit your region schedule,” Beesley said. “The first game of the season you don’t know how to react and you’ve got those first-game jitters. What we’re working on now is getting stuff put in to be ready for region play.”
