VIDALIA — The arraignment of a Natchez man accused in five Miss-Lou sexual crimes involving juveniles was postponed Wednesday because the Seventh Judicial District Attorney’s office wanted more time to consider the charges.

District Attorney Brad Burget said Michael A. Bumgarner’s arraignment was postponed to June 29 to give his office a couple more weeks to review the case.

“We want to take our time and review the file and make our decision about what or anything to charge him with,” Burget said Thursday. “This is not an ordinary case because the allegations are older in nature.

“We want to make sure it is a valid, prosecutable case rather than filing without giving it our due diligence.”

Bumgarner’s arraignment had previously been moved because Bumgarner missed a court date on May 25.

Bumgarner, 39, 28 Alexander Road, Natchez, was allegedly out of the state when he missed his previous date in court.

On Wednesday Bumgarner’s attorney Philip LeTard submitted a travel log to Judge John Reeves, who ordered the file sealed. LeTard said Bumgarner has been faithful at checking in as is required when he leaves the parish for work since Reeves warned Bumgarner in court earlier this month.

Bumgarner is also not allowed to have contact with any females under the age of 21, Assistant District Attorney Joseph Boothe said in court.

Boothe said Bumgarner has to appear at 9 a.m. June 29 or a bench warrant will be issued for his arrest.

Three of the charges are based in Concordia Parish and allegedly happened in 2004, 2005 and 2009. The charges are sexual battery and two counts of third-degree rape.

In April, Bumgarner was arrested twice by the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and charged first with felony molesting of a child and later in the month with touching a child for lustful purposes. One of the charges stems from a 2015 event.
