Tensas Bank capitalized on four walks and three errors to jump out to a 9-0 lead in the first inning of its game against Concordia Bank Thursday afternoon.

Tensas beat Concordia 12-2 in a Dixie Boys Baseball summer league game at the Vidalia sports complex.

Tensas pitcher Tyler Simmons from Amite School Center started the game and pitched there innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Fellow Amite pitcher Tyler Johnson pitched an inning of relief and gave up two hits and struck out a batter.

“I hadn’t pitched in a while. I haven’t thrown much since high school baseball ended,” Johnson said. “I didn’t pitch too bad. A lot of errors killed us.”

Simmons stranded two Concordia runners in the top of the first inning. In the next half inning, Dakota McDaniel led off the first inning with a walk for Tensas. Concordia pitcher Jordan Hamilton, from Natchez High School walked in Simmons with the bases loaded to hand Tensas its first run.

Tensas coach Daniel Simmons said he stressed patient plate approaches to his players.

“We didn’t look for any offspeed stuff, just sat on the fastballs,” Tensas’ manager said. “I told them not to swing at bad pitches. It’s the first time they had been to the plate in a while. I thought they did a good job.”

The bats were fairly cold for Tensas after the first. Tensas had three singles and a double through the final three innings and drew just one walk.

“They walked us a lot and we didn’t get many hits in the first inning just because of walks,” Johnson said. “We put up nine runs in the first inning and didn’t do much after that.”

Johnson said he and his teammates are using the summer season to get loose. His throwing regimen has been light since Amite’s season ended in South State this season.

“They pitched well for not throwing for a while,” Daniel Simmons said. “There weren’t a lot of walks and they let the defense play behind them.”

For Tensas Cole Switzer plated one, scored and reached base with a single and a walk. Jace Calcote scored twice and walked twice. Alex McCready hit the game’s only extra-base hit, a double in the third inning. Gage Dossett was 2-for-3 with a single.

For Concordia, Trevon Henry, Paul Hargrave, Dedarious Jackson and Malcolm Bolden each recorded singles. Pitcher Jordan Hamilton struck out two batters.
