Cathedral High School and Delta Charter School are both under new leadership, and learning was the theme of Wednesday’s 7-on-7 scrimmages at Cathedral High School.

The Storm’s new coach, Zach Rogel, and Green Wave’s head man, Chuck Darbonne, both said it was evident both programs were learning new schemes. However, both coaches remain encouraged by their squads’ enthusiasm.

“We just installed most of the plays we ran today in the last two days,” Darbonne said. “We really just told them how far they’re supposed to run and where they will run to.”

Rogel said the scrimmages were a good chemistry builder for his squad.

“You’re basically at step one,” Rogel said. “(Darbonne is) still getting to know his guys, I’m getting to know my guys. From my perspective, you want to get them working hard, getting that chemistry and gel going.”

While both teams are still adapting, the scrimmages were not short of big plays.

Cathedral quarterback Connor Mire ended a drive with a touchdown on 7-of-13 series. Delta Charter quarterback Trey Poole threw a touchdown on four of eight drives.

“I felt good, and I think we did well competing against two great teams,” Poole said of the matchups with Cathedral and fellow visitor Copiah Academy.

Poole also got involved on the defensive side of the ball with an interception on one of DCS’s final defensive series. The sophomore corner and quarterback credits his ability to jump the passing route to his new coaching staff.

“It starts with great coaches,” Poole said. “They tell you step-by-step what to do, you listen and you can succeed.”

Cathedral senior Derrion Batieste also played on both sides of the ball. The cornerback and wide receiver caught touchdowns on Cathedral’s final two drives against Delta Charter, including an acrobatic catch in the corner of the end zone.

Batieste said he and Mire decided before the play to exploit the mismatch.

“That was the call,” Batieste said. “(Mire) called the play, and I knew I had to get outside. (The cornerback) was a little guy.”

Batieste said Cathedral’s strength is its speedy and powerful slot receivers, including senior tight end Will Wallace.

“With Will playing out on tight end, it’s going to be tough to stop us,” Batieste said. “We’re still picking up on a lot of stuff and still working on it. Everybody is learning, and the coaches talk us
