United Mississippi Bank pitcher Chelsea Maher cleaned up in the pitcher’s circle and at the plate in UMB’s 6-1 win against Super Auto Glass Friday night.
Maher pitched 3.0 innings, allowing just one unearned run with three strikeouts and drove in the first two runs with a two-RBI inside-the-park home run.
In the bottom of the first inning, UMB third baseman Amber Scroggins reached base on a leadoff single. Maher stepped into the batter’s box and squared up a pitch and sent it deep to left field. The ball sailed over the Super Auto left fielder’s head, buying enough time for Maher to race home and give UMB a 2-0 lead.
“I was hoping (I’d be able to get home), but I wasn’t sure since I saw them going for it,” Maher said. “I guess I just got lucky that time.”
In the top of the second inning, Super Auto threatened UMB’s lead with two runners on base — one in scoring position — with no outs. Super Auto’s Miranda Maples grounded into a fielder’s choice to Scroggins at third base. Maher recorded the final two outs of the inning herself with a strikeout and a popup back to the circle.
Super Auto left five runners on base in the game, which might have been the difference.
“There weren’t a lot of hits,” Super Auto Glass coach Jacquetta McCranie said. “It was more walking tonight. If you don’t get the hits, you can’t run.”
Maher, who is in her second season of softball, said she has success stranding runners on base when she dials in and focuses on her pitches.
“I just learned how to block everybody out and not worry about the runners,” Maher said.
UMB ends the season at 5-5 and Super Auto finished 3-7. Keyairah Herrington pitched for Super Auto and batted 1-for-2. Zoey McCranie was 1-for-1 with a single.
For UMB Scroggins was 1-for-2, Zinya Lyles had an RBI double and Shelby Mize hit an RBI single.
UMB coach Jeff Maher said a record over .500 was a matter of a handful of runs, but it was good to end the season on a high note.
“We lost some close games that could have gone either way, we lost some close games by one or two runs,” Jeff Maher said. “Our defense plays solid … When (Chelsea) struggles on the mound the defense backs her up.”
