NATCHEZ — Morgan Baskin smashed a 2-1 pitch deep into the right-centerfield gap, and the Natchez Market outfielder raced around the bases for an inside-the-park home run to help lift her squad to a 7-0 win over United Mississippi Bank in Belles/Debs youth softball action Thursday night.

“I hit (the ball), and they didn’t catch it, so that was good,” Baskin said. “They normally catch the ball when I hit it. I thought I might have stopped at third (base), but it felt good.”

Baskin wasn’t the only member for her squad to have a standout game as Natchez Market managed to pound out seven hits in the win.

“We’re a good team,” Baskin said. “We know how to hit the ball, and get some runs, and we have a good defense.”

While the Natchez Market bats were sizzling at the plate, pitcher Kayla Starr managed to strike out six batters in the win.

“We’ve got a girl on the mound that has pitched great all year,” Natchez Market coach Rudy Wilson said. “We are fortunate that we hit the ball. That’s the difference between us and some of the rest of the teams, because we hit the ball. It’s everybody in the lineup, and that makes a difference because you’re putting pressure on the defense.”

With the win, Natchez Market improved to 8-1 on the season.

“They performed well all season,” Wilson said. “We play as a team, and, of course, we have some individuals that made some great plays, but it’s all about playing together.”

Mississippi Bank struggled from the start as it managed to record just a single hit, but the team also managed to record a pair of walks.

Kathryn Freeman recorded the lone single, while Amber Scroggins and Elizabeth Purvis each reached base after walking.

Asya Terrell had three singles and stole two bases for Natchez Market, while Rivers Lee and Jakiera Hunt each recorded run-scoring base hits.
