The annual Natchez-Adams County Humane Society summer fundraiser is set for Saturday, June 4 at a new location.
For the past four years, the party has been at Lake St. John, but this year the it will be at Lansdowne, the home of Marsha Colson and the Marshall family, from 6 to 8 p.m.
“We’re just taking a different route,” NACHS board member Susan Callon said. “It’s a special opportunity.”
Each party has a theme, and this year the NACHS is throwing a pie party.
Locals have promised to donate a variety of pies, including crawfish pie, turkey pot pie, chocolate pie, key lime pie and a number of other sweet and savory flavors.
The event will also include a silent auction.
Organizing the auction is Norma Williams, and she said plenty of amazing items are on the block this year, including a romance package to Magnolia Bluff Casino and Hotel, a marble garden bench, a telescoping ladder as well as other, smaller items.
Admission to the event is a donation of $25 to the NACHS to be used for everyday operations at the shelter.
NACHS Board member Sue Stedman said the fundraiser typically raises $11,000.
“This money is used for shelter operations,” Stedman said. “Our budget is between $350,000 and $375,000 a year. The city gives us $25,000, the county gives us $25,000 and the rest comes from donations.”
Those operations include feeding, medicating and caring for the approximately 175 animals currently calling the shelter home.
“I hope people come out to support the humane society,” Callon said. “We do such an awesome work, and this is our busiest time of the year. (May 18) we received 27 kittens in one day, and we are still trying to pay for the new shelter.”
The NACHS moved into its new location at 475 Liberty Road last year.
The shelter is open Tuesday through Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Donations can be sent to P.O. Box 549 Natchez, MS 39120 if you cannot attend the pie party event.
