Duncan Park officials talk landscaping

NATCHEZ — Greg Brooking has a plan.

On Tuesday morning, Brooking stood in front of two members from Mississippi State University’s Extension Service and his father Cecil, as the Duncan Park golf course superintendent elaborately and energetically explained what he has envisioned for his golf course.

The focal point of the plan centers around an aesthetic upgrade to the course and the surrounding park.

“We want this course to be the most beautiful city park in the state of Mississippi,” Brooking said.

Brooking said the idea is intended to appeal to the everyday person.

“We want a regular guy to be able to come out and enjoy the site,” Brooking said. “We want people to come out here and say, ‘Man, this is nice.’”

Brooking met with the MSU representatives for approximately 90 minutes as they toured the golf course and entrance to Duncan Park, taking in as much advice as possible.

“They know plants and trees; that’s their expertise,” Brooking said. “I just walk into the woods … We’re way ahead of the game with them.”

Extension professor Lelia Scott Kelly informed Brooking that it would be in his best interest to employ the work of a landscape architect.

“That would be the best thing to do,” Kelly said. “To put plans down on paper, and that’s a good starting point.”

Brooking said his idea originated more than five years ago, and entails a 10-year outlook, consisting of a stage-by-stage initiative to complete the project.

“Nothing good is ever done quickly,” Brooking said.

Brooking added he hopes to elaborate on the beautiful nature of the park each winter, while maintenance will provide course upgrades.

But where will the money come from?

“We have a maintenance budget, so we can do some things,” Brooking said. “But I also hope people would want to donate, and they’ve done so in the past. We ultimately want the course to be as beautiful as it can be.”
