Lawmakers must have skipped physics

From high school physics class, most of us learn that every reaction has an equal and opposite reaction.

Apparently the majority of our state lawmakers skipped that class on Newton’s laws of physics.

How else can one explain their ridiculous handling of the state’s budget this year?

Lawmakers tout huge tax cuts but didn’t give much thought, apparently, to the ramifications.

Lawmakers provided little in the way of true tax reform or wise guidance of downsizing government.

They’ve simply let the chips fall where they may. The result is cuts in services from the state’s mental health office and even reductions in state food inspection officers.

Does it make anyone else feel a bit icky to think that some Mississippi restaurants may only be inspected now on an annual basis?

The foolishness affects all of us, the consumers of restaurants. Without the fear of more regular inspections, restaurant goers must simply hope those in the kitchen are good souls who simply follow the law. Most of us generally follow the speed limits on state roads, but many of us would likely be a little more heavy-footed if we knew the state troopers only checked for speeders one month of the year?

We hope and pray lawmakers will reconsider some of the cuts and find the money to fund what we view as true public service matters.
