NATCHEZ — Most parents will eventually reach a sad milestone when realizing they can no longer help with their child’s homework.

But before children grow into young adults with assignments Mom or Dad can no longer improvise, parents should learn other ways besides homework to involve themselves in their child’s education.

Natchez-Adams School District Federal Program Director Marilyn Alexander-Turner said today’s “Parents Need to Know” program will educate parents on ways to track their child’s education.

The program will last from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Steckler Multi-Purpose Complex and a free hot lunch will be served.

Dr. Earl Watkins, former superintendent of Jackson Public Schools, will be the guest speaker. Alexander-Turner said Watkins will inform parents how to fulfill their parenting role in their child’s education.

“(Watkins) is an excellent speaker, motivator, and he’s a go-getter,” Alexander-Turner said.

Alexander-Turner said the talk will be directed toward parents of students of all ages, “from starting kindergarten to preparing for college.”

In addition to offering ways to make sure children succeed with the support of parental involvement, Watkins will also update parents of new laws affecting their children’s education, such as standardized testing requirements, Alexander-Turner said.

The entire community, not just parents with children in public schools, is invited, Alexander-Turner said.

She said the program is the first session of the NASD-sponsored Summer Parent Academy, with the second session set for July 27.

The parent academy is an annual event in the fall, but offering the program during the summer is new this year.

Morgantown elementary School Parent Center Liaison Luvenia Gaylor said the school district decided to offer parent academy during the summer to give parents a chance to attend before schedules become hectic after the school year starts.

In addition to valuable information, some lucky parents will also receive door prizes, such as Visa check cards, Walmart gift certificates and summer gift bags.
