RIDGELAND — Trinity Episcopal tennis has momentum on its side after the girls and boys teams swept at South State last week.

Now, 10 Saints will play in a two-round sprint for state titles in the MAIS AA tennis championships today in Ridgeland.

Cole Mosby and Grant Falkenheiner will represent the Saints in boys singles, while pairs Cortez Adams-Hunter Yarborough and Sam Mosby-Hartley Pyron will represent boys doubles. Seeded Lady Saints include doubles pairs Lucy Pyron-Tali Beard and McKenzie Smith-Hannah Fitt.

“We have good representation,” Trinity coach Noreen Pyron said. “We have players in six out of the 10 events, so I’m very pleased.”

Falkenheiner received a bye into the finals, since the second boys No. 2 singles spot has been vacated. Cole will play his semifinal match at 9 a.m.

Lucy and Beard will play a semifinal match at 10 a.m., while Smith and Fitt are scheduled to play at 10:15 a.m.

Adams and Yarborough are slotted for 10:30 a.m., and Sam and Hartley play at 10:45 a.m.

Noreen said, although several of her players have won local matches handily this season, she doesn’t expect her players to overlook their state opponents.

“Cole and Grant have not really struggled but they know they’re going to have tough competition,” Pyron said. “Last year Cole went three sets … it’s a whole different ball game.”

With district realignment in MAIS class AA, the Saints will face players from schools they haven’t faced before.

Noreen said she has sensed some anxiety within her team that is polarized regarding the age gap between her players.

While most of Trinity’s players are upperclassmen, the players on the No.2 singles court are both seventh graders.

“It means a whole lot more to them when they are a little older,” Noreen said. “I said (to Sam and Hartley), ‘Everyone has to start somewhere. They asked me if they had a chance to win and I said, ‘Sure you do. You made it to state.’”
