NATCHEZ — There are no complaints from Graham Roberts about his new job as Trinity Episcopal’s new head football coach, not even regarding his roughly two-hour daily commute from West Monroe, La.

Roberts, whose family has yet to make the move to Natchez, said the drive is where he gets a lot of his thinking done. When he accepted the position at Trinity, Roberts said he wasn’t exactly sure what the makeup of his team was beyond the limited game film he watched online.

Roberts said he has been pleasantly surprised about the work ethic of his squad.

“These guys continue to push themselves,” Roberts said.

In addition to his squad’s dedicated work ethic, Roberts also noticed the talented playmakers he has at his disposal, particularly in standout Trey Russell.

Russell said he has seen Trinity’s young team grow through one week of practice. The upcoming senior wide receiver and defensive back said the best weapon on both sides of the ball is the Saints’ speed.

“We’re going to have a fast-paced offense and get the job done,” Russell said. “Coach Graham has high intensity, and in return we, want to work hard for him.”

Roberts said another bright spot on his new squad is the work assistant coach Jason Wisner has done with his offensive line.

“We’re going to have a hellacious offensive line,” Roberts said. “That might be something people don’t yet realize. I have a coach with college experience working with them, and they are coming a long way.”

Roberts’ specialty is with coaching quarterbacks. Roberts said there was a plan in place for him to return to his alma mater, Vidalia High School, to coach quarterbacks under Vikings head coach Jeff Hancock.

In the end, the head-coaching gig at Trinity was too good for Roberts to pass up.

“It was a great opportunity with a great group of kids,” Roberts said. “Trinity has a great history of winning and that’s no different this year.”

Robert said that the spot for the Saints’ starting quarterback remains to be determined, but he said he has options.

“We have guys who are returning, and we will actually have a pretty healthy competition this spring,” Roberts said.

Roberts did not specify the players competing for the quarterback spot. Incumbent quarterback Kevontaye Caston enters his senior season.

From Russell’s point of view, it doesn’t matter who is throwing him the ball on Friday nights. He plans on making the play.

“That won’t affect my preparation at all,” Russell said. “I’m going to get the job done no matter who throws me the ball.”

Trinity will host its spring game at 6 p.m. on May 17, against former Trinity coach Zach Rogel and his new squad, Delta Charter School.
