Curious about style: Pique by Mush wants to help captivate with confidence

NATCHEZ — If you’re looking to transform from tacky to trendy, Tuwanna Williams wants to help you.
But even if you’re already on the edge of fashion and just looking for something new, Pique by Mush is the right store for you, Williams said.
“When a woman comes in here, she can walk in one way and walk out looking completely different,” she said.
That’s because Pique isn’t just a clothing store — it’s a styling salon where clients will not only have the opportunity to shop for clothes, but will be able to get their hair and nails done as well.
Located in a historic bank building at 411 Franklin St., Pique by Mush is starting out with clothes but will soon offer a VIP area in the downstairs bank vault for those who want to have styling done.
“If people are in here shopping, you will be downstairs, and no one will see you,” Williams said.
The clothing offered has an emphasis on being stylish but being functionally able to go from day to night, she said.
“We might sell a domestic dress — which is a very popular style right now — that a woman can wear to work and make only minor changes — maybe wear a blazer with it, but then take it off at the end of the day — and you’re ready to go out in the evening,” Williams said.
Since the store is catering to working women, it will be open until 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Shoppers can also call for private appointments.
“We are keeping extended hours because the customers we are trying to reach, working women, if they are working 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the shops are all closed,” Williams said.
“It is about convenience, convenience, convenience for the working woman. We want them to be able to have the life of the highest quality and that they can and get full styling services that they want.”
The name “Pique” was chosen because Williams wanted to stimulate — or pique — people’s curiosity or interest about the possibilities of what they could do with clothing.
The “by Mush” part of the name comes from Williams’ daughter Martinique Howard’s Pink Mushrooms Styling Agency, which will offer cosmetic, beauty and fashion advice — as well as fashion photography in the shop’s photo studio — in addition to launching a clothing line from the boutique.
The Mush clothing line will start with athletic wear for women of all shapes and sizes, Howard said.
“We will be filling a need in the fashion world, and we will be helping women feel confident about living a healthy lifestyle and looking good,” she said.
“We want to provide all sizes in truly fashionable cuts that they can feel good in.”
And that’s an overall emphasis of the boutique, and part of why designing the store space meant preserving its historic integrity while adding contemporary artistic touches, Howard said.
“Natchez has a great energy, and when designing the store, I wanted to focus on that energy walking in the door, which is why we really worked with the wood and the tile that’s already here,” she said. “I wanted it to be fun and comfortable. I like the vintage feel, and I like the energy of the city.
In addition to the fashion photography, Williams said the shop would offer costume photography similar to what one would find in other tourist-heavy areas.
