MONTEREY — Law enforcement investigators are trying to determine the identity of a corpse found Friday evening in a wooded area near Monterey.
The body was so decomposed that it was unidentifiable, so forensic experts from Louisiana State University have been called to assist in the investigation.
Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Vernon Stevens said no arrest has been made in the case yet, but the investigation is ongoing.
“They are still working the case and to say too much on it now might hurt their efforts,” Stevens said.
Chief Deputy David Hedrick of the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office said the remains are deteriorated to the extent that no positive identification has been made at this time.
Hedrick said he requested assistance from the Louisiana State Police Investigative Division with the investigation of the scene where the remains were found.
State police requested assistance from LSU’s Forensic Anthropology and Computer Enhancement (FACE) Laboratory in identifying the remains and making a possible determination of the cause of death.
Stevens said either the Louisiana State Crime Lab or FACE would use DNA testing and digital facial reconstruction technology to help identify the remains.
Law enforcement officers would not speculate if the remains may be Duell Moreland. The Monterey man has been missing since March 29. CPSO has been investigating Moreland’s disappearance since he was reported missing.
Hedrick said law enforcement officers from multiple local, state and regional agencies have conducted five massive searches for Moreland spanning of thousands of acres in the last four weeks.
“We have conducted searches on foot, ATVs, horseback and by air using helicopters and personnel from the Louisiana State Police and Adams County Sheriff’s Office expending hundreds of man hours,” Hedrick said.
Hedrick said CPSO has received help from the FBI on several occasions during the investigation.
Dozens of interviews have been conducted with Monterey residents in the effort to find Moreland, Hedrick said.
“I have maintained daily contact with the family of the missing individual,” Hedrick said. “Our investigation is ongoing, and we will continue to devote our best efforts until we bring this case to a successful conclusion.”
