NATCHEZ — Earlier in the week, Trinity Episcopal head coach David King said the Saints’ game against Alpha Christian School would be an X-box kind of game in that it would be exciting and possibly high-scoring.
But Trinity’s defense would have none of it as it held Alpha Christian to just four first downs and 59 yards of total offense as the Saints steamrolled to a 48-0 win over the Crusaders Friday night.
Givonni Dent threw two touchdown passes to Brandon Daggs, the first a 16-yarder early in the first quarter and the second one went for 36 yards late in the third quarter. Daggs also picked off a pass and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown less than 20 second into the third quarter.
Kent King had 154 yards of total offense and was the Saints’ leading rusher with 12 carries for 120 yards and one touchdown. R.J. Fleming had 12 carries for 83 yards and a pair of first-half touchdown runs. As a team, the Saints had 287 yards on the ground.
Daniel Dunaway also got into the act late in the ball game as he scored on a 60-yard run and finished with 67 yards rushing on just two carries.
Trinity Episcopal (4-0) led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter, 21-0 at halftime and 35-0 heading into the fourth quarter. The No. 1 team in MAIS Class A finished with 389 yards of total offense.
Dent completed 3-of-8 passes for 68 yards while Fleming was 1-for-3 for 34 yards. The Saints’ defense forced four turnovers, including three interceptions. In fact, Alpha Christian (1-2) had as many completions as it did interceptions.
The only thing coach King probably wasn’t happy with was that the Saints put the ball on the ground eight times, with the Crusaders recovering three fumbles.
Centreville 21, Silliman 0
CENTREVILLE — It wasn’t pretty, but a win is a win and the Centreville Tigers found a way to win ugly over the Silliman Wildcats in MAIS District 5-AA action on a wet Friday night.
The wet field was the only thing that could slow down Centreville senior running back Zach Sinclair, who had 21 carries for 76 yards. However, he scored two touchdowns on runs of four yards in the second quarter and two yards in the third quarter to give the Tigers a 14-0 lead.
Cliff Hurst scored on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter to finish off the shutout win for Centreville (3-1, 1-0), ranked No. 2 in Class AA. The Tigers won the game despite having one of their worst rushing games in recent memory with just 152 yards on the ground and two turnovers.
Silliman (1-3, 0-1) was only able to get 169 yards of total offense and seven first downs against Centreville’s defense. However, it did have one more rushing yard than the Tigers did.
