Nominees for CVB positions to be proposed Tuesday

NATCHEZ — Natchez Mayor Butch Brown said the city is a “heartbeat away” from securing an interim director for the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Brown said he plans to provide nominees for the interim director and at least four members of the Convention Promotion Commission Tuesday at the Natchez Board of Aldermen meeting.

“That’s important to me, because we need to get a board in place so we at least have a quorum so bills can be paid,” Brown said. “I’ve been working on it since a couple days before we cleared the other bunch out.”

The Board of Aldermen voted Monday to ask for the resignations of all six former commissioners and former CVB Director Kevin Kirby. The measure came after several months of ongoing personnel issues and a city-level investigation into the CVB.

Brown said he intends to meet privately with each of his nominees before the aldermen ratify his or her commission in order to go over the duties of the position.

Brown said he wants each commissioner to be acquainted with the legislation that created the commission, and what his or her responsibilities are.

“There hasn’t been an in-depth review of those responsibilities in a very, very long time,” Brown said. “Hopefully, after they’re appointed officially, we will sit down and have a class so to speak. Let’s go through this legislation point by point.”

This, Brown said, should fix prior issues where the commission thought they were responsible for other offices in the welcome center.

Brown said he also hopes the commission would not be dominated by just one or two voices.

“I mean, we’re talking about, hopefully, mature, intelligent, non self-serving people that want to contribute their time and efforts to the city,” Brown said. “Not someone that just goes with whatever comes from a vocal member or two.”

In the meantime, some staff members at the CVB are still operating its day-to-day activities.

For tourism-related questions and concerns that cannot be answered by the CVB’s remaining crew, Brown recommended visitors and residents reach out to Natchez Convention Center Director Walter Tipton, who was formerly the CVB director.

Tricentennial Director Jennifer Ogden Combs said her office has been receiving support from the remaining CVB staff, but will be glad when a full complement of personnel is back on board.

“Certainly it will be better when the structure is back in place, but in terms of promotion and making sure the community is aware of what we’re doing, we were a train out of the station Jan. 2 and we’re still in full motion,” Combs said.
