NATCHEZ — The first time Natchez High School played Brookhaven High School they lost 18-1.
The Lady Bulldogs didn’t have much better luck Friday.
Brookhaven scored 11 runs in the first inning to get past Natchez 18-0 in three innings.
“I think we were intimidated,” Natchez coach Bonita Hamilton said. “(Brookhaven) in the past has beaten us every year. And I think in their minds they had, ‘Here we go again.’ I don’t think they weren’t focused, but the balls just weren’t going in the glove like we would have wanted them to go.”
Brookhaven didn’t let up after the first as it added five more runs in the second and scored two more in the third.
“We have to get back out there and make up for all of our mistakes,” Hamilton said. “Mistakes will kill you in a game.”
Despite being held scoreless, Natchez managed to hit a number of line drives offensively, and Hamilton said she was pleased with her team’s approach at the plate.
“(Destiny Trask) and (Destiny Lyles) always do a good job for us,” Hamilton said. “(Trask) hit the ball hard (in her first at-bat), but it was off the end of the bat.”
Trask recorded a base hit in the third and promptly stole two bases to lead Natchez. Donisha Edwards reached base with a walk in the same inning.
The loss caps off what was an overall strong week for the Lady Bulldogs (2-2), who defeated Port Gibson and McComb by a combined 35-15.
“I’ll take winning two out of three,” Hamilton said. “I’m still smiling. Winning two games at home was huge.”
Natchez will attempt to get back on the winning track Thursday at Vicksburg High School.
