LONGVIEW, Texas — Graveside services for Elizabeth Hoggatt Whatley, 89, who died peacefully at her home Tuesday, April 5, 2016, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the mausoleum in Rosewood Park in Longview, Texas.
Burial will follow under the direction of LeRoy Rader Funeral Home in Longview.
Mrs. Whatley was born Jan. 17, 1927, in Bristol, Okla., the daughter of a Borden’s milk manager.
She lived all over the South during her childhood, graduating from high school in Marshall, Texas. She traveled the world during her adult years with her family and met her best friend Theresa Baker through a shared love of English horse riding. She hosted countless soirees at Lake Bob Sandlin and called Longview home for the past 22 years.
Elizabeth leaves a legacy of philanthropy. Some of her greatest loves were the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Historic Natchez Foundation, Northeast Texas Community College, Trinity School of Texas, any and all animal shelters and countless other organizations in Houston, Pittsburgh, Natchez and Longview.
Mrs. Whatley was preceded in death by her only and most loved son, James Mason; her husband, James Royce; one sister, Nathalye Hoggatt Chastain; and her parents, Nathaniel Hoggatt Jr. and Lottie May Fortner.
Survivors include one granddaughter, Jennifer Whatley Ogilvie and husband, Landon; three great-granddaughters, Madeline James, Nanette Elizabeth and Laurel Elise, all of Longview.
The family warmly thanks the number of people that helped to care for Elizabeth throughout the years, including Matt Clinnard, Kathryn Goldman and the entire Comfort Keepers family, Dr. Anil Singhal of Choice Home Health, Cristy Black and Hospice of East Texas and Drs. Stephanie and Greg Payne.
