NATCHEZ — Amite School Center scored three runs in the third and five more in the fifth inning en route to beating Trinity Episcopal 12-0 in four innings Tuesday in MAIS action.

The Rebels jumped out early with two runs in each of the first and second innings before exploding in the final two frames.

“We looked sloppy on defense, more than we have all year,” Trinity coach Elliot Meng said. “We just came out flat, and we kicked balls around.”

Saints pitcher Cole Switzer pushed through four innings, despite not receiving the strongest support behind him. The junior right-handed hurler completed the game with four strikeouts.

“It’s frustrating on the mound, I’ve been there,” Meng said. “He knows his and he knows to pound the zone. He did those things well (Tuesday), and he got ahead in the count.”

Trinity’s best chance to score came in the first when it put runners on the corners with two outs. However, second baseman Tre White was thrown out trying to steal second base.

Landon Lees and Switzer recorded the Saints’ two hits in the game.

“I liked some of our at-bats,” Meng said. “We had good hitting, good line drives, and we can be aggressive at the plate, but also know when to be patient. We’re getting better in that area.”

The two teams will square off again at 6 p.m. Friday when Trinity travels to Amite School Center.

“They know their young,” Meng said. “But as long as they stick together, they know they can build something special. Growing pains are a part of it … We’re young and this makes us better (in the long run) — seeing varsity pitching.”
