Concordia Parish district attorney sued

VIDALIA — An attorney alleging Concordia Parish District Attorney Brad Burget attacked him has filed a lawsuit, but Burget says he is the one who was, in fact, attacked.
The civil lawsuit stems from a March 2014 incident in the judge’s chambers at the Concordia Parish Courthouse during which Baton Rouge attorney Felix “Andy” Anthony DeJean IV alleges Burget, without provocation, grabbed Dejean by the neck and pushed him over a chair during a heated discussion about a case.
Burget said, however, Dejean initiated physical contact with him. Burget said Dejean threatened him and pushed his shoulder into Burget, knocking him backward, before hitting Burget in the stomach.
Burget said he was able to subdue Dejean and get him to the ground.
Present in the chambers were Johnson and staff members for the judge’s and district attorney’s offices, Burget said.
The Louisiana attorney general’s office investigated the incident then passed the case along to Lafourche Parish District Attorney Camille A. “Cam” Morvant, who is prosecuting a simple battery case against Dejean in Concordia Parish. The trial date is set for April 29.
Burget said Dejean’s lawsuit is “frivolous.”
“He attacked me, and now he is suing me, the victim,” Burget said.
Dejean’s attorney Kevin Stockstill of Lafayette, La., said, however, Dejean is the victim.
“Our position is that the person who got battered that day was not Mr. Burget, but Mr. Dejean,” Stockstill said.
Dejean is seeking compensation for being the victim of a battery, Stockstill said.
When the case goes to trial, Stockstill said he plans to question in court why the attorney general’s office recused itself from the case and why the charge against Dejean was not presented to a grand jury.
A request for comment from the attorney general’s office was not returned Monday.
