NATCHEZ — The Natchez-Adams County Humane Society is asking supporters to turn their old shoes into cash for the cause — and help someone else along the way.

The non-profit animal shelter is partnering with Funds2Org and WoofTrax, a group that works with non-profits in fundraising, through May 15 to collect gently used shoes.

“This is a neat fundraiser because it helps two different groups,” NACHS Board President Kathy Fitch said. “It helps our non-profit to raise money because they pay us for shoes that are collected.

“They give us so much per pound for the shoes, and that is a fundraiser that goes to our shelter. Then they take these shoes and they send them to third world countries, where the shoes are used. They are donated to people who need them or to small businesses who will benefit from the shoes. It is win-win-win.”

The shoes have to be “wearable and usable, but not new,” Fitch said, and donated in pairs.

The shoes will earn the shelter 40 cents per pound.

“This is people helping animals helping people, which is very cool,” coordinator Deanne Tanksley said.

“I think it is a really neat idea because it is not just us collecting shoes to send some place, but we will benefit from it, and with spring cleaning was a good time to do it. I think it will be a lot of fun.”

The goal for the NACHS is to collect 100 bags of shoes.

“It won’t cost us anything if we don’t collect 100 bags, but they will deduct a little of the shipping fee from our check,” Tanksley said.

Shoes can be dropped off at the Paws for a Cause thrift store locations — 101 S. Shields Lane and 230 U.S. 61 South, both in Natchez — or collected at a business, where NACHS volunteers will pick them up.

At the same time, the NACHS is running a no-bake bake sale — but for this bake sale, no one has to make a cake.

“We often have people make things for different fund raisers, but we thought it would be a cute idea that, instead of having a bake sale — because everybody was busy — have no bake sale and just have the people give the money they would have spent baking and have the money go to what it needs to,” no-bake sale coordinator Susan Callon said.

The funds from the sale will go to the general monthly expenses of the shelter, Callon said, and no donation is too small.
