More candidates qualify for city races, qualifying period complete

NATCHEZ — Qualifying for the upcoming City of Natchez election ended Thursday, but not before a few new candidates added their names to the ballot.
In Ward 1, Cara René Adams joined incumbent Alderwoman Joyce Arceneaux-Mathis in the race for the alderman seat. Both are Democrats.
In Ward 4, Joseph Louis Gunning qualified to run for alderman. Jeremy Houston, Edwin White, Barbara Wesley Bruce and Felicia Rochelle Bridgewater Irving previously qualified in Ward 4. All are Democrats.
In Ward 6, Republican Burnley Cook qualified for alderman. Incumbent Dan Dillard and Agnes Holloway, both Democrats, previously qualified.
Adams County Justice Court Judge Charlie Vess, a Republican, qualified to run for municipal judge, joining local attorneys Lisa Jordan Dale and Carmen Brooks, both Democrats.
Former Adams County Board of Supervisors President Darryl Grennell, sitting Ward 4 Alderman Tony Fields and Eric Shaun Junkin have qualified in the race for mayor. Brown, Grennell and Fields are Democrats, and Junkin is running as an independent.
Sitting Mayor Butch Brown previously qualified for re-election but withdrew from the race Thursday.
In Ward 2, Tamathy Dunn-Franklin, Billy Joe Frazier, and Brian Johnson qualified for the alderman seat recently vacated by Rickey Gray who was elected as an Adams County supervisor late last year. All are Democrats.
Democrat Sarah Carter Smith qualified for re-election to her seat as Ward 3 alderwoman. She is the only candidate running unopposed.
Sitting Ward 5 Alderman Mark Fortenbery and challenger Benjamin Davis, both Democrats, have qualified for the Ward 5 seat.
The partisan primaries will be May 10 and runoffs, if needed, will be May 24.
The general election will be June 7.
