Come see Historic Natchez Tableaux

Published 12:01 am Wednesday, March 9, 2016

There are so many fantastic events taking place in Natchez as we celebrate our 300 year anniversary. The Historic Natchez Tableaux is one that is sure to please. The Tableaux committee has been working tirelessly with Natchez’ own Greg Iles to create an updated production that depicts a more inclusive history of our great city.

We began this effort prior to last year’s show. The Garden Clubs recognized that it was time to tell more of the whole story of Natchez, not just the pretty parts. The 2014 season was a great success, but this is an ongoing creative process. We not only want to be sensitive to all the people of Natchez, but also to give a more historically accurate portrayal of our shared past.

Such ambitious changes are never easy, but for the people involved, it has been more than worth the effort. The new Tableaux has attracted some stunning young talent from our city schools and churches. This is now a show for everyone.

While many traditional tableaux such as Little Maypole, Big Maypole, and Soirée remain, scenes such as the Wedding have been updated as dramatic musical vingettes. Feedback from repeat tourists tells us that the most impactful difference between the old and new Tableaux is that the new show takes audience members on an intense emotional journey through the history of our great city.

Saturday, March 19, will be exceptional! The Tableaux will feature double royalty. This wonderful ritual from long ago has recently been restored. As an added treat, The Pilgrimage Historical Association will once again host its “Save the Hall Ball”, for the preservation of Longwood and Stanton Hall, immediately following the performance. Tickets for all events may be purchased at Natchez Pilgrimage Tours. Black tie is required.

We would also like to extend a special invitation to our local groups and organizations in town. A night out for dinner and the Tableaux is perfect for a gathering with friends from your church, women’s club or supper club, alumnae association, or any other social organization of which you are affiliated. Please tell your friends. Once again, tickets are on sale at Natchez Pilgrimage Tours at the Visitors Center, 640 S. Canal St., in Natchez. Lynn Beach Smith is the Group Sales Coordinator. She can arrange the perfect event for everyone in your group. Call 601-446-6631 for ticket information or online at sales@natchezpilgrimage.com

Please come out and support this volunteer community effort, Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. March 4 through April 2. The cost of admission is $15. Hope to see you there!
