NATCHEZ — Natchez High School baseball’s doubleheader against Jefferson County High School was postponed Tuesday due to the threat of severe weather.

Coach Dan Smith said the games are rescheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Natchez is now slated to play four games over a 24-hour period. Smith said he is at least eight pitchers deep, which he thinks will be enough to get through four games over the weekend.

“I have enough pitching where I can get a few innings here or there,” he said. “We can stretch them out if we have to. I’m not trying to overhaul their arms this early in the season.”

Smith said all of his pitchers have been on strict pitch counts. Some of his players are recently returning from basketball season and haven’t been able to throw consistently leading up to the season.

“I tell them before the game, I would have taken him out if he was throwing a no hitter,” Smith said.

Tuesday would have been Natchez’s regular-season opener. The Bulldogs were swept in a pair of exhibition games Saturday. Natchez lost the first to Salem, 6-5, in eight innings and the second, 5-4, to West Lincoln.

“As a coach there are certain things you’re looking for, but I was very happy the way we fought back and stayed in the games,” Smith said. “We did a tremendous job in eight innings both games and I took away all positives from the loss.”
