Vidalia auditor: Late audit ‘on us’

VIDALIA — The Louisiana State Auditors’ office lists the City of Vidalia as being out of compliance with state law, but the city’s independent auditor says the issue may be addressed as soon as today.
The auditing firm is also taking responsibility for the non-compliance, which was the result of late filing.
Vidalia’s audit that was due for the fiscal year 2014-2015 — which ended June 30 — was due Dec. 31, but was not filed with the state auditor’s office as of Thursday.
City Accountant Ashley Anderson said the city provided all requested information to the auditors in a timely fashion and had anticipated the audit meeting the deadline.
Wes Gore, the certified public accountant with Silas Simmons who led the Vidalia audit, said the delay was “primarily on us right now.”
“Over the last 15 months, I have lost some key auditors I haven’t been able to replace yet,” he said. “We still have plenty of staff, but as far as experienced staff, they were spread a little thin, and we took responsibility for that.”
Gore said even under ideal circumstances, Louisiana’s required six-month turnaround “is a pretty tight window.”
“I’ve worked on the Vidalia audit since the mid-80s, and about half the time it has been a couple of weeks late. The good news is we are fixing to get this thing released and put that to a rest.”
If the report was not submitted by the end of the day Thursday, it would be likely be submitted to the state auditor by today, Gore said.
“The auditors will probably spend a couple of days reviewing it, and then probably sometime next week, it will be available on their website,” he said.
Anderson said the city accounting department received a draft copy for review last weekend, and the mayor and management at Silas Simmons would have an exit meeting to discuss the audit.
Once it is uploaded to the legislative auditor’s website, it will be available for review at City Hall for any member of the public who would like a copy, she said.
The Town of Clayton was the only other Concordia Parish government listed as being out of compliance with the audit law as of Thursday.
