NATCHEZ — Natchez Mayor Butch Brown said he will likely return home to Natchez next week.

Brown, who suffered two strokes last month, said he left St. Dominic’s Hospital two weeks ago to begin treatment at Methodist Rehab Center in Jackson.

He is satisfied with his rate of recovery, Brown said, but is unsure when he will start attending Natchez Board of Aldermen meetings again.

His last board meeting was on Nov. 28.

Brown said he suffered paralysis on his left side, but has regained use of his left hand through daily therapy.

“My program is doing quite well,” Brown said. “It’s one of the best rehab centers in America, and we’re blessed to have it in Mississippi.”

Brown said Mayor pro tem Joyce Arceneaux-Mathis has been keeping him up to date on board agendas and discussions.

“The city’s in good hands,” Brown said. “I think (Arceneaux-Mathis) has done a good job, and she’s keeping me informed on what’s going on in the city. “

Arceneaux-Mathis said she is satisfied with how city projects are progressing, in spite of Brown’s absence.

At the board’s meeting Tuesday evening, discussions about the E-911 service left the board asking Police Chief Danny White and Fire Chief Aaron Wesley how the mayor had been handling the project before his absence.

“I think the board is going to have to sit down and look at all the projects going forward,” Arceneaux-Mathis said.

Arceneaux-Mathis said she was satisfied with the state of the city’s affairs without Brown.

As mayor pro tem, Arceneaux-Mathis has handled the beginning of the city’s Tricentennial and an emergency flood situation.

“I personally think we’re doing wonderfully,” Arceneaux-Mathis said. “Everything is running smoothly.”
