NATCHEZ — For Cathedral varsity boys head coach Peter Arnold, Tuesday’s game against Sebastopol played out like a movie.

But the ending wasn’t what he wanted to see.

Sebastopol was able to pull away late in the fourth quarter against Cathedral, winning 62-55. Despite Cathedral cutting the Bobcats’ lead to two several times in the second half, the Green Wave were never able to get over the hump and take the lead.

“Several times we got it down to a basket lead, and then it seemed like No. 23 (Brandon Hawkins) hit a three every time,” Arnold said.

“They pushed (the lead) back out to five, then seven, and we’d chip away, then we’d do it all over again. It was like the movie ‘Groundhog Day.’”

After trailing 27-21 at intermission, Cathedral’s Daniel Huffines hit a field goal, and Carl Hammitte sank two free throws to make it 27-25 Sebastopol. Right on cue, though, Hawkins delivered from downtown, giving Sebastopol a 30-25 margin with 5:28 left in the third.

Hawkins scored a field goal with 5:04 left to make it 32-25, but the Green Wave began to claw back at the lead again. Luke Whitaker hit a two-pointer, then with 4:16 left in the third, Huffines sank a layup and drew a foul. Huffines made the and-one, cutting Sebastopols lead to two once again.

But once again, Hawkins hit a big three-pointer with 3:35 left in the third, and added a field goal at the 3:14 mark to give Sebastopol a seven-point cushion. The Bobcats scored five more points to Cathedral’s four, giving them a 42-34 lead after three.

The back-and-fourth between Sebastopol and Cathedral continued in the fourth quarter. In the final three minutes of play, Cathedral cut Sebastopol’s lead to three twice, but were once again unable to take the lead.

“We missed too many close, point-blank shots,” Arnold said. “We missed four or five in the third quarter particularly, and it just comes back and haunts you.”

Hawkins led the game in scoring with 21 points, and Carl Hammitte led Cathedral with 17 points. Eric Burks tallied 12 points for Sebastopol.

Cathedral fell to 7-10 overall, 1-4 in regional play.

The Cathedral varsity girls didn’t score a single point in the first half as they fell to Sebastopol Tuesday evening.

Cathedral went 0-for-21 in shooting in the first quarter, and didn’t get on the board until Epiphany Jackson hit a field goal 15 seconds into the third quarter.

“We just didn’t show up to play,” Lady Green Wave head coach Bernita Dunbar said.

“It was more mental than anything. Our fire wasn’t there. It can happen any given night. We won our previous two games and felt like we started to turn it around, but we’ve still got work to do.”

Jackson led the Lady Green Wave with eight points. Ginny Daggett scored four points. Cathedral trailed 23-0 at the half and 38-10 at the end of three.

“We have to keep working,” Dunbar said. “We have a lot of improving to do. We’re sitting at 2-3 midway through the region, so we can still make some noise.”

The Lady Green Wave fell to 6-11 overall.
