Boys roundup: Trinity knocks off WCCA

WOODVILLE — David Jackson led Trinity Episcopal with 16 points and Dee Fleming added 15 points as the Saints defeated Wilkinson County Christian Academy 67-54 in an MAIS District 5-AA game Tuesday night.
Four players contributed with eight points each for Trinity Episcopal — Spencer Adams, Kevontaye Caston, CJ Chatman and Cole Mosby.
Led by Hutch Holden and Caleb Poole, the Rams outscored the Saints 17-10 in the second quarter to go into halftime down just seven points at 35-28.
But the Saints would put a halt to that comeback attempt with a 19-12 advantage in the third quarter for a 54-40 lead.
Holden led the Rams with a game-high 17 points and Poole ended up with 19 points.
Trinity Episcopal (9-5, 4-1) plays Friday at Franklin Academ. WCCA (no records available) plays Friday at Clinton Christian Academy.
Columbia Academy 63,
ACCS 56
COLUMBIA — Adams County Christian School hung tough with Columbia Academy, ranked No. 2 in MAIS Class AAA, but the Cougars pulled away in the fourth quarter to escape with a 63-56 win over the Rebels in an MAIS District 4-AAA game.
“It was a tight game at the end. We started fouling and they just made their free throws,” Rebels head coach Richy Spears said. “We got in some foul trouble, and we had three (players) foul out.”
Columbia Academy went into halftime with a 34-30 lead over ACCS before the Rebels cut into the lead in the third quarter and were only down by one point, 47-46, at the end of the quarter. However, the Cougars outscored the Rebels 16-10 in the fourth quarter.
“We hustled. We did some things offensively, and they played hard,” Spears said. “Everybody just played hard. Sneh Patel knocked down some 3s, and Devin (Spear) hit some open shots.”
Spear led all scorers with 21 points and Patel added 13 points.
ACCS (12-7, 3-5) plays host to Class AAA No. 1 and undefeated Simpson Academy in district action at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Jefferson County 62, Hazlehurst 52
FAYETTE — Akeem Williams led Jefferson County with 19 points and Christian Day poured in 15 points as the Tigers held on for a 62-52 win over Hazlehurst in MHSAA Region 7-3A action Tuesday night.
Jefferson County struggled offensively in the first half, yet still had a 25-22 lead over Hazlehurst at halftime.
Josh Day chipped in with 10 points for the Tigers.
Jefferson County (9-8, 3-0) plays host to rival Wilkinson County Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Block 88, Montgomery 78
MONTGOMERY, La. — A.J. Barber led Block with 25 points and Devonta’e Curry added 18 points as the Bears edged past the Montgomery Tigers 88-78 in an LHSAA District 3-1A game Tuesday night.
Four players ended up scoring in double figures and another was just one point away. K.J. Jones contributed with 17 points and Chris Holmes had 15 points while Jermaine Miller scored nine points.
Block needed a big second quarter to take the momentum away from Montgomery after the Tigers jumped out to a 23-17 lead after one quarter of play. The Bears answered by outscoring the Tigers 26-13 for a 43-36 halftime lead.
After an even third quarter in which both teams scored 18 points, both teams put on an offensive display in the fourth quarter. But it was the Bears who did the most scoring with 27 points to the Tigers’ 24 points.
Block (2-1 in District 3-1A) host Logansport at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Ferriday 69, Sterlington 39
FERRIDAY — The Ferriday Trojans used a big third quarter to open up a double-digit lead en route to a 69-39 win over the Sterlington Panthers in an LHSAA District 2-2A game Tuesday night.
The Trojans outscored the Panthers in each of the first two quarters, but they were up by just eight points, 31-23, at the half. Then Ferriday took it to Sterlington in the third quarter and led 53-32 at the end of the quarter.
Ferriday (12-5, 2-1) plays at Mangham Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Peabody 100, Vidalia 54
VIDALIA — The Peabody Warhorses improved to 21-1 overall and 5-0 in LHSAA District 3-3A after taking care of the Vidalia Vikings 100-54 Tuesday night.
No other information on the game was available as of press time.
Vidalia (8-11, 3-2) host Avoyelles High School Friday at 7:30 p.m.
