NATCHEZ — Larry L.“Butch” Brown was in recovery Friday afternoon after a reportedly successful surgery to treat his prostate cancer, Brown’s son Sessions Brown said.

Doctors at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, performed robotic surgery Friday morning.

“The surgery went very well,” Sessions said.

“The doctor was quite pleased.”

Brown, 67, said several weeks ago doctors planned to conduct tests at the time of the surgery to determine if the cancer has spread.

Sessions said Friday his father will be in touch with an update on his condition.

“He’s in recovery and he’s doing well,” Sessions said.

Brown’s doctors discovered a few months ago his prostate cancer had come back for the third time since 2008.

Brown said when he was first diagnosed in 2008 with prostate cancer; the doctors treated him with radioactive seeds.

He said he discovered approximately a year later the seeds failed to rid him of his cancer.

At that point, Brown received radiation therapy, which he thought was successful.

Brown said a team of four medical professionals specializing in surgery oversaw his case at M.D. Anderson.

Brown’s doctor at the University Medical Center in Jackson recommended he have the surgery at the Houston cancer center because the previous treatments Brown underwent made the procedure more complicated, Brown said.

Brown announced this month plans to retire June 30 from his post as executive director of the Mississippi Department of Transportation, a job he’s filled for a decade.

The exact recovery schedule isn’t yet known, but Brown said he has a “bucket list” of things he plans to complete before leaving MDOT.
