NATCHEZ — Brookhaven Academy’s plan was to try and limit the double scoring threat of Givonni Dent and Tip McKenzie against Trinity Episcopal Saturday night.

But when two Saints were in the crosshairs, two more stepped up, as Kent King and Jake Winston combined for 34 points in a high-scoring 80-70 Trinity win.

Trinity led 62-49 at the end of the third quarter, and pulled 73-54 with 4:55 left. Saints head coach David King then subbed in some of his backups to finish the game, and Brookhaven Academy outscored Trinity 16-6 in the final few minutes.

King led in scoring with 18 points, and Winston added 16 points. David King said his team’s collection of athletes allowed them to make up for Dent and McKenzie being honed in on.

“We have a lot of good ball players, and I think they were obviously trying to key in on Tip and Givonni,” David King said. “It’s hard to focus on one guy with the players we have. Each night someone else keeps stepping up.

“I thought, overall, the first (team) played really well, and we sort of lost our focus with the second group and got a little sloppy.”

Trinity only led 19-16 after the first quarter, but some hot shooting by Winston helped the Saints begin to pull away in the second. Winston scored 11 of his 16 points in the second, and finished the game with four three-pointers. Trinity led 47-33 at intermission.

“Jake has a very good stroke,” David King said. “Again, he’s one of those guys that can score, and I thought they were concentrating on Tip and Givonni, and those guys stepped up and made the plays. That tells you how diverse we can really be.”

Winston went cold in the third, but Kent King stepped up and scored nine of the Saints 15 points to give the Saints a 13-point lead going into the fourth.

McKenzie finished with 15 points, and Dent tallied 12 points. L.J. Trimble added 10 points.

Trinity improved to 20-4 on the season.

Bethany Ogden led the Lady Saints with 18 points and Madelyn Cross finished with 16 as Trinity edged out the Lady Cougars in overtime.

The game was tied 44-44 at the end of regulation, but Trinity outscored Brookhaven 8-3 in the extra period.

The Lady Saints rose to 18-8 on the season.
