NATCHEZ — With Caleb Upton still out with an injury and other stars battling the flu, the Cathedral Green Wave have had to rely on new players to step up their game.

On Monday night against Mississippi School for the Deaf, D.J. Perry and Khalil Brice did just that as the two led a balanced scoring attack in Cathedral’s 76-41 win over the Bulldogs in Region 7-1A action.

The Green Wave didn’t exactly get off to the start for which head coach Peter Arnold was looking. They led the Bulldogs just 10-8 at the end of the first quarter. But once Cathedral changed its defense, the game quickly turned into a blowout.

“We just had a very sluggish first quarter. We went to a full-court man-to-man in the second quarter and we picked up our intensity,” Arnold said.

Cathedral scored 25 points in the second quarter while Mississippi School for the Deaf was held to just 10 points as the Green Wave took a 35-21 lead into halftime. The third quarter was almost a carbon copy for Cathedral as far as points scored were concerned but for MSD — not so much.

The Green Wave outscored the Bulldogs 22-4 to take a 57-25 lead. Perry led Cathedral (8-11, 2-5) with 16 points and Brice finished with 12 points. Luke Whitaker and Jamon Gray scored nine points apiece.

“We were able to push it out to a (14)-point lead at the half. We picked it right back up in the third quarter. We made sure everybody got to play a lot,” Arnold said.

Trinity Episcopal 74, Prairie View 38

NATCHEZ — Talk about domination. Trinity Episcopal scored over 20 points while Prairie View Academy didn’t even reach double-digit scoring in each of the first two quarters as the Saints rolled past the Spartans Monday night.

L.J. Trimble led Trinity Episcopal, the No. 3 team in Class A, with a game-high 20 points. Even though he was the only Saints player to score in double figures, nearly every player on Trinity’s roster got into the scoring column. Tanner Cage had nine points while Sky Logan and Jake Winston added eight points each.

The Saints controlled the action on both ends of the court in the first half. They jumped out to a 26-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and then they held the Spartans to just eight points in the second quarter on their way to a 53-14 halftime lead.

Curtis Blakely didn’t have the performance he had against Trinity in a loss to the Saints back in early December when he scored 34 points. Yet he still led Prairie View with 18 points

Trinity Episcopal (21-4) plays at Class AA No. 2 Central Private today at 6:30 p.m.

Franklin Academy 60, Tensas Academy 36

ST. JOSEPH, La. — Led by Ethan Vick and Cedric Allen, Franklin Academy jumped out to a big lead and never looked back as the Cougars defeated the Tensas Academy Chiefs Monday night.

Vick scored 13 points and Allen added 11 points for Franklin Academy, which had a 24-10 lead over Tensas Academy at the end of the first quarter and continued to add to its lead the rest of the way.

Blaine Fletcher led Tensas Academy with a game-high 15 points. The Chiefs play at Tallulah Academy today in MAIS District 6-A play.
