VIDALIA — Malik Jefferson had one of his best games of the 2015-2016 season Tuesday night as he led all scorers with 20 points as the Vidalia Vikings annihilated the Bolton Bears 85-40 in their LHSAA District 3-3A opener.

The first quarter belonged to Vidalia on both ends of the court. The Vikings turned defense into offense from the get-go, and just like that, the blowout was on. By the time the first quarter was over, Vidalia had a 24-5 lead.

“I thought we executed our full-court press well. We got a lot of points off turnovers that we forced,” Vikings head coach Robert Sanders said. “We (also) played a good inside and outside game.”

Bolton’s highest offensive output came in the second quarter as they put up 16 points. Unfortunately for the Bears, Vidalia continued its offensives showcase as the Vikings scored 25 points to take a 49-21 lead into halftime.

Jefferson was not the only player for Vidalia to score in double figures. Julius Wilson contributed with 18 points and Demarco Brown added 13 points.

“(Jefferson) made lay-ups on fast breaks and he made a few threes as well. He’s coming back to his old self,” Sanders said. “Julius was knocking down threes as well. He’s coming back to himself as well. He’s not favoring his ankle like he was early in the season.”

The second half was more of the same – Vidalia scoring at will and not much Bolton could do about it. Deshod Dixon led the Bears with 11 points.

Vidalia (6-9, 1-0) plays host to Marksville in District 3-3A action at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Cathedral 57,

Monterey 23

NATCHEZ — James Coley led three Cathedral players in double figures with a game-high 15 points as the Green Wave cruised to a 57-23 win over the Monterey Wolves Tuesday night.

Cathedral dominated Monterey through the first three quarters. With Coley, Jardarius Anderson, and Derrion Batieste leading the charge, the Green Wave outscored the Wolves 16-7 in the first quarter, 10-4 in the second quarter, and 22-6 in the third quarter.

“We played good defense tonight. Monterey’s in a rebuilding mode, too,” Cathedral head coach Peter Arnold said.

Both Anderson and Batieste finished with 10 points each for the Green Wave.

Cathedral (11-4) next plays at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Adams County Christian School in a pivotal MAIS District 4-AAA game.

Trinity Episcopal 70,

Franklin Academy 58

NATCHEZ — Kevontaye Caston made five three-pointers and finished with a game-high 26 points to lead the Trinity Episcopal Saints to a 70-58 win over the Franklin Academy Cougars in their MAIS District 5-AA opener Tuesday night.

Trinity Episcopal led Franklin Academy by just three points, 15-12, at the end of the first quarter. However, a 24-point surge in the second quarter allowed the Saints to pull away from the Cougars en route to a 39-26 halftime lead.

The Cougars tried to get back in the game in the third quarter, but the Saints would have none of it as they outscored the Cougars 18-15 in the fourth quarter.

Demond Fleming scored 16 points, David Jackson had 12 points, and Cole Mosby added a pair of three-pointers of his own to end up with eight points.

TEDS travels Friday to Amite School Center.
