NATCHEZ — It’s out with the old and in with the new this weekend as Natchez celebrates the dawn of 2016 with fireworks, tours and a Unity, Prayer and Praise Celebration.

The first days of the New Year are predicted to be chilly and cloudy. Temperatures on Friday and Saturday are predicted to reach highs in the upper 40s and lows in the 30s.

New Year’s Eve

Fireworks

Tonight at midnight 2015 becomes 2016, a change Miss-Lou residents can celebrate with a bang.

At 10 p.m. people can gather around the Mississippi River on both the Natchez and Vidalia sides to enjoy a fireworks display and welcome in the New Year.

“It’s great because it’s not just one side of the river,” President and CEO of the Natchez Chamber of Commerce Debbie Hudson said. “You have two sides that are able to participate in it, so that’s kind of fun.”

Fireworks will be set off from the middle of the river. On Wednesday, Hudson said it looked like the weather would allow the display to go ahead.

Vidalia Director of Marketing and Public Relations Sheri Rabb asks residents not to drive or park vehicles on the levee at the Vidalia riverfront due to rain saturation. Also, foot traffic is to be kept to a minimum, as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be in the area to monitor the levee.

Unity, Prayer and Praise Celebration

This Saturday, Natchez residents can mark the official start of tricentennial celebrations with a Unity, Prayer and Praise Celebration.

The interfaith celebration invites the community to come to the Natchez City Auditorium for songs and readings by members of several Natchez churches.

Churches participating in the event include Christ Life, Holy Family Catholic Church, St. Mary Catholic Church, First Baptist, St. Pilgrim Baptist, Temple B’nai Israel, Zion Chapel African American Methodist Episcopal and Parkway Baptist.

The event begins at 10 a.m.
