TYLERTOWN — The Wilkinson County Lady Wildcats bounced back from their home loss to Franklin County by soundly defeating the Tylertown Lady Chiefs 63-44 Friday night.

In what was the Region 7-3A regular-season finale for Wilkinson County, head coach Trimeka Gaines was glad her team pick up a big victory for seeding in next month’s region tournament, but wasn’t exactly thrilled that the girls didn’t play better than they did or that the margin of victory wasn’t more lopsided.

“We knew that we had to win. I wasn’t pleased overall because we had a lot of simple mistakes. It was a win, but it wasn’t a pretty win. We had 12 turnovers. We’ve got to cut down on turnovers. We have to capitalize on everybody else’s turnovers.”

The Lady Wildcats were focused on getting off to a good start and that’s exactly what took place. They didn’t let the Lady Chiefs get many open looks at the basket and that in turn allowed Wilkinson County to make some easy shots.

Wilkinson County was led by Tyesha Harris with a game-high 20 points and Breshianna Day with 14 points. Ambernekia Palmer was a pleasant surprise for the Lady Wildcats in this game as she finished with 11 points.

At the end of the first quarter, Wilkinson County had a 20-6 lead. But during the next two quarters, Tylertown did its best to stay in the game. Led by Appressia Sims and Alisha Fortenberry, the Lady Chiefs actually outscored the Lady Wildcats 18-14 in the third quarter.

That was the good news. However, they dug themselves a 20-point halftime deficit, 37-17, after they were outscored by the Lady Wildcats 17-11 in the second quarter. Despite scoring just 12 points in the fourth quarter, Wilkinson County held Tylertown to only nine points.

Sims led Tyletown with 11 points and Fortenberry added 10 points.

Wilkinson County (9-15, 5-5) plays host to Natchez High, the No. 4 team in Class 6A, next Tuesday night.

Bogue Chitto 64, Cathedral 17

BOGUE CHITTO — Four players scored in double figures in this Region 7-1A game Friday night. All of them were on Bogue Chitto’s team.

Tesheon Rogers led all scorers with 24 points and Josie Porter had 13 points as the Lady Bobcats, ranked No. 4 in Class 1A, rolled to an easy win over the Cathedral Lady Green Wave.

Cathedral fell behind early and often and was never able to get on track against the top team in 7-1A and one of the best teams in all of 1A.

“We couldn’t get anything going. Our shots weren’t falling,” Lady Green Wave head coach Bernita Dunbar said.

And if a team’s shots are going in against a team the caliber of Bogue Chitto, that makes for a very long game.

Bogue Chitto (23-1, 8-0) jumped out to a 26-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. It only got worse for Cathedral in the second quarter. The Lady Green Wave scored just three points and trailed 43-10 at halftime.

“We didn’t get back as fast as they did. Their big girls are very mobile down low. We had a hard time trying to conceal their big girls,” Dunbar said.

Aneshia Dillon and Teareon Rogers added 10 points apiece for the Lady Bobcats. The Lady Green Wave was led by Ginny Daggett with seven points.

Cathedral (7-13, 3-5) hosts longtime rival St. Aloysius next Tuesday.

Jefferson County 49, Hazlehurst 48

HAZLEHURST — Brandy Buck finished with a game-high 14 points while Taylor Mims and Haley Turner as the Jefferson County Lady Tigers rallied to defeat the Hazlehurst Lady Indians Friday night in Region 7-3A action.

Hazlehurst trailed Jefferson County 12-7 after one quarter of play, but the Lady Indians responded by putting 15 points in the second quarter and 16 in the third quarter to take a 38-36 lead.

The Lady Tigers, however, seemed stuck on scoring 12 points a quarter. Which is what they did in each of the first three quarters. But in the fourth quarter, they outscored the Lady Indians 13-10 to escape with a big win on the road.

Hazlehurst was led by Jasmine Bozeman with 13 points and Kiara Shannon with 11 points.

Jefferson County (4-5 in Region 7-3A) hosts Amite County next Tuesday.
