Years ago, former Adams County Supervisor Spanky Felter won our hearts with his “can-do” attitude toward getting things done in county government.

Felter’s approach often included a roll-up-his-sleeves-and-get-dirty approach, including his willingness to climb on a roof of a county building and make a needed repair.

Adams County’s government should consider creating an internal award for suggesting ways the government could become more efficient.

If such an award were to exist, we’d say Supervisor Mike Lazarus would be the December 2015 winner for his suggestions that the Natchez-Adams County Port may be able to save money by partnering with the county’s own maintenance crews.

Lazarus brought up the matter earlier this week after seeing two rather large invoices for mechanical work and trucking services, for a combined $48,400.

Lazarus suggested, perhaps, the port and the county might be able to save money by sharing mechanic and other logistics resources.

That makes good sense and beyond any control issues the port’s leadership may have, which if they exist need to be quelled, such collaboration makes good financial sense.
