NATCHEZ — The City of Natchez has lost 14 percent of its population and Adams County has lost 6 percent of its population over the last decade, according to 2010 U.S. Census Bureau numbers.

The numbers, which were released to the public Thursday, show that Natchez had a population of 15,792 residents in 2010, compared to 18,464 residents in 2000.

Adams County’s population decreased to 32,297 in 2010 from 34,340 in 2000.

Numbers also broke down changes in district sizes, which will determine whether the county and city will be required to go through the redistricting process.

The county redistricted after 2000, meaning there is no exact comparison of 2010 numbers with 2000 numbers.

Mayor Jake Middleton said the numbers do not surprise him too much because he expected that they would reflect the city lost some of its residents to the county.

“There has not been growth inside the city limits as far as they housing market,” Middleton said.

Board President Darryl Grennell Friday said he had not looked at the numbers yet but will planned to study them that day.

Chancery Clerk Tommy O’Beirne has said redistricting will be required if district sizes have a 10- percent variation from an ideal district size, which is calculated by dividing the total population by the number of districts.
