NATCHEZ — The Natchez High Bulldogs were looking to pull off an upset of the Brookhaven Panthers, the fifth-ranked team in Class 5A, Saturday afternoon. They were also hoping to end a two-game losing streak.

Natchez High took a double-digit lead over Brookhaven at the end of the first quarter. But they were unable to hold on to that lead and ended up with a heartbreaking 56-55 loss to the Panthers.

Brookhaven could have folded the tent after trailing Natchez High 15-4 after one quarter of play. Instead, the Panthers rose to the occasion and eventually tied the game at 38-38 at the end of three quarters thanks mainly to a 21-point outburst in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs aided in the Panthers’ comeback by scoring just nine points in the second quarter to lead by just seven points at halftime. Brookhaven won the game with an 18-17 edge in the fourth quarter.

Trevon Chatman led Natchez High (10-14) with a game-high 27 points. Brookhaven (21-5) was led by Leo Garrett with 17 points and Keith Johnson with 14 points.

Natchez High will be the No. 4 seed in the Division 6-6A Tournament at Terry and will take on No. 1 seed Wingfield Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Sebastopol 78, Cathedral 63

SEBASTOPOL — The duo of James Patrick and Brandon Hawkins was too much for Cathedral to overcome as they combined to score 52 points in the Bobcats’ win over the Green Wave in Region 7-1A action Saturday afternoon.

Patrick, a senior and the team captain, led all scorers with 33 points and Hawkins, also a senior, added 19 points. Sebastopol (15-7, 7-3) opened up a close game by outscoring Cathedral 22-14 in the second quarter for a 39-29 halftime lead.

The Bobcats kept the Green Wave from going on a big run and allowing them to get back in the game during the second half. Even though Cathedral (9-13, 3-7) scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, Sebastopol put up 23 points.

The Green Wave was led by Carl Hammitte with 14 points and Tyler Jordan with 11 points.

Cathedral will be the No. 4 seed in the Region 7-1A Tournament at Mississippi School for the Deaf and will go up against No. 5 seed St. Aloysius in an opening-round matchup Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Mangham 64, Ferriday 49

MANGHAM, La. — Ted’Rai Gullage scored a game-high 30 points to lead Ferriday, but it was not enough as the Trojans lost to the Mangham Dragons Saturday night in a District 2-2A game.

Both teams went back and forth in taking the lead in the first quarter, which ended with Mangham having a 14-10 advantage. The Dragons started to pull away from the Trojans in the second quarter and ended up with a 31-20 halftime lead.

Despite Gullage’s effort to keep Ferriday in the game, Mangham more than withstood his scoring prowess. The Dragons put the game away with a 21-13 advantage in the third quarter for a commanding 52-33 lead.

Mangham was led by D. Pridgett with 17 points and M. Gayden with 15 points.

Ferriday (1-5 in District 2-2A) hosts Farmerville Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. for Senior Night.
