WOODVILLE — Last Friday was a night to forget for Wilkinson County High School, as it lost to Prentiss Senior High School 35-19.

Wilkinson County (1-2) head coach Elbert Lyles said his team didn’t do “anything right” in its game against Prentiss.

“Defensively, we didn’t have a whole lot of effort at all,” Lyles said. “We were very disappointed in our defensive effort.

“On offense, I don’t think we had good effort either, and I don’t think we did a good job blocking.”

Because there was so much disappointment last Friday, Lyles said he and his staff are hard at work this week trying to correct the mistakes.

“Overall, we were not pleased with the outcome or the effort in the game,” Lyles said. “Maybe we didn’t prepare them as best we could, or maybe they weren’t focused enough.

“We’re trying to correct all of that this week. We’ll make some personnel changes and hopefully move forward.”

Despite the negative feelings from Wilkinson County’s last game, Lyles said there were some positives to take from the game — mainly in the scoring plays.

“Devin Fosselman scored two touchdowns, one on about a 70-yard kickoff return, and another on about a 60-yard reception,” Lyles said.

“The other score came from Graigland Freeman, on about a 48-yard catch.”

Wilkinson County will now shift focus to Port Gibson High School, which it will face at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

“They defeated Madison High School 26-6 last week,” Lyles said. “I think they’ll have that same momentum. They’re aggressive. They don’t do a lot of things, they just do what they do; play power football.

“We need to play better than last Friday. If we play the same this Friday that we did (against Prentiss), we’ll have the same result.”

Lyles said practice has been going well for his team this week, and he’s trying to maintain a positive attitude with his players.

“We’re just trying to keep them up and keep them motivated,” Lyles said. “Hopefully, we can keep everything up-tempo and keep their minds focused.”

Getting a victory Friday is the only thing he’s worried about this week, Lyles said.

“We have to block on the offensive front consistently,” Lyles said. “We’re going to have to be aggressive defensively in order to have any success.”
