WCCA set for championship clash today

JACKSON — The journey is almost over for Wilkinson County Christian Academy, and what they have been striving for all season is well within their reach.
Today, the Rams will take the field at Millsaps College in Jackson in the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Class A-AA state championship game against Tri-County Academy.
WCCA (11-2), the No. 1 seed, will have their hands full with No. 7 seed Tri-County (11-2), who has taken down the No. 2 and 3 seeds in the playoffs.
“They’ve got a really good running back who is a decent-sized kid and runs hard,” WCCA head coach Chris McGraw said.
But what may give the Rebels an advantage is the return of their quarterback.
“He actually broke his ankle in Week 2, but came back in the second round of the playoffs and had a heck of a game,” McGraw said. “It is going to be different having to get ready for him. He’s a player, and can throw the heck out of it.”
For WCCA, the week of practice has been different, not just because a championship is on the line, but also because of inclement weather sweeping through the area.
“What we do normally on Wednesday we had to do on Monday,” McGraw said. “We didn’t do a lot Tuesday because the rain came through and that backed us up. But Wednesday is a light walk through because I really don’t see the point in taking a chance of getting injured.”
McGraw said his team is at full-strength, minus a couple of season ending injuries from earlier in the year.
Offensively, McGraw said the Rams will continue to do what they do despite coming up against one of the better defenses they have seen.
“We want to limit their possessions,” McGraw said. “If we can keep the ball way, they won’t score. They are physical, big up front and know what is going on for sure.”
As for the big stage, McGraw has been stressing focus all week.
“We just have to keep focused and keep doing what we do,” he said. “We’ve got to be ready to play and do our job.”
WCCA and Tri-County are scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Millsaps College.
