WOODVILLE — The David Haywood era at Natchez High continued its solid start Wednesday as the Bulldogs picked up their second win of the season, 68-54 against Wilkinson County.
“We played in spurts,” Haywood said. “I’m happy we came away with the win, but I can see better in them. I’ll take the win any day, but the process, we need to clean a few things up.”
Jadarrius Ivory returned to the court after missing the team’s season opener, and led Natchez with 15 points.
“Jadarrius came to me after the game and said he could do a whole lot more,” Haywood said. “A couple of times he got gassed and had to come out, but overall I think he contributed well.”
Some new faces for the Bulldogs also chipped in with Izzy Holmes adding 11 points and Elijah Hill scoring 10 of his own.
“They’ve got something in them,” Haywood said. “They want to get better and their intentions are always in the right area. They are trying to do something good for the team. I look to get a lot out of those two guys.”
Next up for Natchez High is a showdown with the top team in Class 4A, McComb.
“That is a great chance for us to bring a big win back home to the community,” Haywood said.
Ferriday 54, Tensas 50
TENSAS — Ferriday head coach K.G. Watkins said the Trojans are a work in progress, but they are heading in the right direction.
Ferriday picked up its first win of 2015, 54-50 against Tensas High Wednesday.
“We’ve got a lot of rust from football, but we found a way to pull it off,” Watkins said. “We started out with the kids who had been with us all year and then tried to work in the football players gradually. They had just one day of practice and don’t have their basketball legs yet.”
Carlos Collins led Ferriday with 17 points and Dare Rosenthal added 13. Dantrieze Scott also contributed with 12 points.
Watkins said one major issue the Trojans ran into in the game was sending Tensas to the free throw line.
“They scored 14 points on free throws,” he said. “We committed so many fouls. These football guys are still so aggressive, so there was a whole lot of contact fouls. But, it’ll get better.”
One of the biggest questions surrounding Ferriday this season is guard play. With some of the biggest players in the state, the Trojans are looking for their guards to help complete the team.
“That is going to be one area we have to continue to work on,” Watkins said. “Guys are going to step up, though.”
Next up for Ferriday is a clash with neighboring Vidalia on Friday.
Port Gibson 89, Delta Charter 36
PORT GIBSON — After breezing through junior varsity play last season, the Delta Charter Storm got their first look at varsity action Wednesday against Port Gibson.
Although results didn’t go in the Storm’s favor, falling 89-36, head coach Ron Ellis still saw some positives.
“We started off good in the first quarter,” he said. “But then they hit two threes and got the momentum.”
Ellis said physicality was the key in the game.
“That is what we really have to get used to,” he said. “Our guys weren’t used to it and we weren’t boxing out.”
Much of Delta Charter’s team is making the transition from football, so Ellis said it will take some time for them to gel.
“Everyone except for three played football,” he said. “So we are still doing some shuffling. I think we can go eight or nine deep on any given night and be comfortable.”
DaVern Mays led the charge on offense for Delta Charter with 13 points and Dawson Woodruff added seven.
